Abstract

Movie is a picture or life event that is brought to the screen as a means of communication and entertainment. Messages or signs contained in the movie can be analyzed using semiotics. Semiotics is the study of signs. The aims of this research is to determine the types and meanings in semiotics by using Roland Barthes Theory. Roland Barthes developed the theory of semiotics into three stages, namely, denotation, connotation and myth. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The data taken from scenes and script of Aladdin movie 2019. The researcher collect data by watching movie, observe main characters in scene and movie script, make take note and categorize sentence of semiotics by Roland Barthes theory and analyzes the results data. The types of signs found are denotation, connotation and myth. The researcher found 38 types and meanings of semiotics by Roland Barthes consisting of 21 types and meanings of denotation, 13 types and meanings of connotation and 4 types and meanings of myth. From the explanation above, the types and meanings of denotation is more dominant and the least is myth. The results of this study state that the type of semiotics by Roland Barthes can be used to explain the meaning of semiotics contained in it. The type of Semiotics by Roland Barthes in this movie also has different meanings in describing something according to the reference to the word or phrase used in the movie scene.

Abstract

Interest is important because it will be a motivating force for encouraging students to learn. It is also an aspect of motivation building, a phenomenon that arises as a result of social interaction and student interaction in learning activities. This research was aimed at finding out whether there is correlation between students’ interest in English YouTube contents and vocabulary mastery. Furthermore, in this quantitative research, the researcher used correlation research design. The population of this research was fourth semester of students of English department of PGRI University of Banyuwangi. This study used a sample of 13 students from the 2019 class. The researcher gave questionnaires to know students’ interest in English YouTube contents, and test to know the students’ vocabulary mastery. The result of this research shows that there is no correlationm between students’ interest in English YouTube contents and vocabulary mastery. It is provided by the t ro = 0,05 and rtable = 0.552 with a standard of significant 95%. The value of correlation product moment is lower than r table (0,05 < 0.552). It found that rxy = 0.05 in r table on the interval 0.00 – 0.199. So, the null hypothesis (H0) of the research is accepted , but Ha is rejected. It means there is no correlation between Students’ Interest in English YouTube Content and Their Vocabulary Mastery at PGRI University of Banyuwangi.

Abstract

Online learning is the best solution for the teaching and learning process during Covid-19 pandemic.This study aims to determine students’ perceptions on the online learning implementation. The research method used in this research is survey method. The respondents were the all of students on English Educational Department at PGRI University of Banyuwangi. The technique sampling used the purposive sampling. The data collection method was carried out by filling out the questionnaire through Google Form and interviews to find out the students has a good or bad perception on the online learning implementation. The result of this research regarding the student’s perception on the online learning implementation during Covid-19 of English Educational Department students at PGRI Banyuwangi University is in the good category with the overall percentage is 65%. For the result of the interviews, the implementation on the online learning during Covid-19 pandemic can help them to carrying out the learning process easier. However, there are still some obstacles of the implementation on the online learning such as lack of understanding and an unsupported internet network. As for suggestion from the researcher, the students should be actively looking for the materials from the other sources, not only receive from the lecture. It aims to make the learning process more effective.

Abstract

This research is a descriptive study on the use of politeness principle in the Smallfoot movie. The researcher employed descriptive qualitative method by collecting the utterances of the movie. This research aimed to identify the types of politeness principles used by the main character in the Smallfoot movie . This research analyze the politeness principles by using Brown and Levinson (1978) politeness theory. The result show that Smallfoot movie consists four types of politeness principles. They are 7 bald-on record, 8 positive politeness, 4 negative politeness and 2 off-record. In the types of politeness principles used by the main character consist 70 utterances they are 34 (48,5%) utterances of bald-on record, 25 (35,7%) utterances of positive politeness, 8 (11,5%) utterances of negative politeness and 3 (4,3%) utterances of off-record. Based on the result of this study, the researcher expects this study gives contributions to the researcher herself and the readers and for further researcher who interseted in analyzing movie

Abstract

This research was a descriptive qualitative research. Aim at describers types and motives of swearing uttered by Dave and Halley in Crawl Movie by Alexander Aja. This research focused in analyzing words which contain swearing that are used by Haley Keller and Dave in Crawl Movie by Alexander Aja. The scope of this research is Sociolinguistics field that has function to know the relationship between language and society. This research only focuses in analyzing the types of swearing and the motive of using swearing.. The researcher used documentation method to collect the data. In this research, the researcher applied three steps of data analysis made by Miles and Huberman theory, those three steos are data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The researcher found that there are 3 types of swearing that is used in Crawl Movie. Those are expletive, abusive, and auxiliary. The expletive is the most swearing uttered by the characters in Crawl Movie. They appeared 22 times. It is followed by the abusive which are uttered 5 times and auxiliary are uttered 5 times. Therefore, there are 3 kinds of swearing motives. They are psychological, social and linguistic motives. Psychological is the most motive used in the movie. Swearing with psychological motive occurred 24 times. Meanwhile, linguistic motive occurred 5 times. Then, social motive only occurred 3 times.

Abstract

Figurative language is a language that uses expressions with different meanings from literal interpretations. This research used thirteen types of figurative language. They are hyperbole, simile, metaphor, personification, irony, metonymy, synecdoche, litotes, symbol, paradox, allegory, antithesis, and sarcasm. This research focuses on analyzing the types of figurative language found on the album entitled “25” by Adele. The objectives of this research are to find out the types and meaning of figurative language of the song lyrics on the album entitled “25” and to find out the most dominant figurative language used in the song lyrics in the album entitled "25". In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The results of this research show nine types of figurative language in the song lyrics. They are hyperbole 19,04%, simile 14,28%, metaphor 4,76%, personification 9,52%, metonymy 14,28%, symbol 9,52%, litotes 4,76%, paradox 9,52%, and allegory 9,52%. The dominant figurative language is hyperbole. It is used to compose beautiful sentences that will give a dramatic impression and can emphasize emotions.

Abstract

Objectives of this research are to identify types and functions of lexical cohesion and the most dominant one in Frozen II movie. The researcher employs descriptive qualitative method by downloaded movie’s script from internet and classified the lexical cohesion in utterances of the main characters in script of Frozen II movie. After collecting and selecting the data, the researcher starts to analyze the data by using Miles and Huberman's qualitative data analysis method. The method consists of three steps, namely data reduction, data display, and verification and conclusion drawing. The results show that in Frozen II movie there were 151 utterances of lexical cohesion. They are 110 data of reiteration and 41 data of collocation. In reiteration was found 94 repetitions, 9 synonyms, 3 superordinates, and 4 general words. In collocation was found 17 antonyms and 24 unordered lexical sets. The lexical cohesion that often used by authors in Frozen II movie was reiterations in order to send implicative meaning which hoped understood by viewers. Furthermore, the researcher finds reiteration as the most dominant type.

Abstract

This research is a descriptive qualitative which analyze the illocutionary act in the main character in Spider-Man: Far From Home Movie. This research aimed to identify the types and functions of illocutionary act in the main character in Spider-Man: Far From Home Movie. The researcher used Miles and Hubberman’s theory to analyze the data. It consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The research found that there are 4 types of illocutionary act that used by the main character in Spider-Man: Far From Home Movie based on Searle theory: those are representatives, expressives, directives, and commisives. Directive is the most illocutionary act used in this Movie. They appeared 36 times. It is followed by expressives which are uttered 31 times. Then, representatives are uttered 8 times and commisives are uttered 3 times. Therefore, There are 4 types of illocutionary function used in this movie based on Searle theory: competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive. Competitive is the most illocutionary function used in this movie. They appeared 55 time. It is followed by convivial which are uttered 16 times. Then, collaborative uttered 4 times. The forth is conflictive that uttered one times.

Abstract

Subtitling is written translations from the source language to the target language, which are positioned at the bottom of the screen that appear and disappear along with the dialogue in the film. Translators often find difficulties in translating subtitles contains many cultural terms (culture-specific items/CSIs). CSIs are culturally specific concepts that do not exist in other cultures. Therefore, the researcher chose to analyze CSI by taking object from Peter Lee's documentary film entitled “The Mark Of Empire Majapahit”. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The purpose of this study was to find out the strategy of CSI and subtitling strategies of CSIs in the documentary film of “The Mark of Empire Majahpahit". In this study, the researcher focused on looking for CSIs in the form of words and phrases in the film. After that, the researcher categorizes the types of CSIs using the Newmark model. Then, the researcher analyzed the subtitling strategy of CSIs words proposed by Pederson. The results of the study found 45 words and 73 phrases of CSIs. The translation strategies of CSIs were retention (53 ), followed by calque (28), shift (8), specification (1), generalization (1), omission (0), and substitution ( 0).

Abstract

Code mixing in movie is the phenomenon found in almost our daily life. The characters use two or more languages into one phrase to make communication with the interlocutor. When, someone communication could be more interesting mix the languages. The reseacher analysed Bridezilla movie to identify the types of code mixing and to describe the factors of code mixing. The types and factors of code mixing are based on Fasold and Weinrich theory. The result showed that Bridezilla movie consist two types (word and phrase type). The result showed that there are 73 words and 48 phrases type. The dominant type of code mixing is “word”. The researcher found that there are factors of code mixing, they are 105 internal factors (8 homonyms, 95 low frequencies of word, and 2 synonyms) and 16 external factors (4 factors of introduction and development of new cultures, 3 factors of oversights, and 9 factors of social values). Based on the result above, it was concluded that all types and factors of code mixing that was found in Bridezilla movie.
